Cohabitant

Our cat lies at peace, caught between
two legs, in feline immobility that
lasts as long as he chooses. At night,
awake, he dashes from window to window,
capturing the world one frame
at a time, as we fail in our sleep.

He is not one of us, even though
he shares our bed, the boards
we walk on, eats the food we offer him,
in gratitude for granting us
his blessed presence, seen,
then not, as is his august right.

All things are connected. That's the premise of what William J. Joel does. Each of Mr. Joel's interests informs each other. Mr. Joel has been teaching computer science since 1983 and has been a writer even longer. His works have recently appeared in Common Ground Review, DASH Literary Journal, The Blend International, Liminality, and North Dakota Quarterly.
