Butterfly Kisses

Battering me
with your hummingbird wingbeats,
I clenched, tensed up,
covered my face with my forearms and fists
like a boxer on the ropes –

not realizing that your wingbeats
were butterfly kisses
and, not being used to such affection,
I considered it an assault;
then,

I came to my senses;
put down my defenses;
unclenched, untensed
and opened my eyes,
finding you gone.
