The Small World of Zita and Alfred

They not only know
some of the same people

but they communicate this
to each other

against all odds.
Zita wears a purple dress

upon which she has spilled
bleu cheese.

Alfred is concerned
about his toddler niece

who fights “eye monsters”
when told she can’t stay

up past her bedtime.
The newscaster

predicts five to seven
inches of snow

in a tone that Zita describes
as threatening.

Some of that snow falls,
and the world returns

to actual size.
